NARROWSBURG – The Upper Delaware Council, Inc. (UDC) has recently added the “Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River Design Handbook” to its website features available at www.upperdelawarecouncil.org.

The Design Handbook explains practical methods to undertake construction or develop property within the 55,000-acre designated river corridor that perpetuate its scenic, natural, and historical heritage.

Originally published in 1990, the handbook is based on the federal Land and Water Use Guidelines that accompany the “Final River Management Plan for the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River” adopted in 1986.

The 34-page Design Handbook includes: a summary of the Upper Delaware’s legislative provisions; a river setting description; a map denoting the corridor’s Congressional boundaries and classification of
recreational or scenic sections between Hancock, NY and Mill Rift, PA; and a design concepts section that discusses and illustrates six land use principles and objectives.

While print copies of the booklet were long ago depleted and the governmental contacts list is outdated, the Design Handbook continues to offer valuable information in a reader-friendly format.

The National Park Service Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River secured funding to re-print the document. The UDC converted the Design Handbook into an electronic file available for download on the  organization’s Publications website page. The Publications section also provides links to the River Management Plan, several brochures including the UDC’s “Visitor Information Map and Guide for Touring the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River”, and an archive of “The Upper Delaware” newsletters posted in full color.

Other website features include a home page description of the non-profit organization and its services; a map of the designated Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River corridor and the UDC office’s Narrowsburg, NY location; and navigation bars to access the UDC’s membership directory, meeting schedule and minutes, news releases, Technical Assistance Grants (TAG) program, links & resources, a photo gallery, and contact information.

The website was created by W Design of Barryville, NY in consultation with UDC staff and officially launched on July 4, 2008. New York State Assemblywoman Aileen M. Gunther (98th District) secured a Community Projects Appropriation grant to subsidize the project.

Established in 1988, the UDC is the oversight body responsible for the coordinated implementation of the River Management Plan for the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, a component since 1978 of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
